Founder & Self-Defense Instructor:
Doris Rivera-Black is a dynamic self-defense instructor who combined her own experience with domestic violence and extensive law enforcement training into her powerful and enlightening “NEVER a Victim” seminar for women.
Using a positive attitude, real-life examples and proven defensive tactics techniques, she provides women with simple and effective methods they can use in everyday self-defense and awareness.
A domestic violence survivor herself, Doris believes women can learn a lot from her experience. She appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show to tell her frightening story, hoping it would help other women recognize domestic violence signs and come forward to get help.
Doris also decided to take a proactive role in helping women by developing her “NEVER a Victim” program, which is based on her extensive personal knowledge and training.
As a law enforcement professional and instructor, Doris has more than eight years experience in jail security, patrol, parole and teaching. She has 70 hours of SWAT training, was only the third female graduate of the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Special Response Team academy and taught defensive tactics, (Krav Maga, Pressure Point Controlled Tactics and Controlled Force), to Sheriff’s Office recruits.
She was also a Colorado Department of Corrections community parole officer and is a fluent Spanish speaker who taught basic Spanish to fellow law enforcement officers.
Doris also helps advance the status of women and help victims of domestic violence through her volunteer work with Zonta Pikes Peak and TESSA. Zonta strives to advance the status of women through education and advocacy. TESSA provides domestic violence and sexual assault awareness advocacy, counseling and victim safe houses. She also donates 20 percent of seminar profits to local women’s groups.
Besides her scheduled seminars, Doris is available for private seminars and telling her story through speaking engagements. Please e-mail her for more information.
A married mother of three, Doris lives in Colorado Springs and enjoys working out and spending as much time as possible with her immediate and extended family.
